For the programs where the language of instruction is French, The Ministère de la Langue française (MLF), the Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur (MES), and the Ministère de l'Immigration, de la Francisation et de l'Intégration (MIFI) have agreed that the standardized tests accepted will be those currently recognized by the MIFI. Specifically, the following tests are accepted

  • The Test d’évaluation de français adapté pour le Québec (TEFAQ), administered by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris Île-de-France (CCIP-IDF);
  • The Test de connaissance du français pour le Québec (TCF-Québec), from France Éducation International;
  • The Test de connaissance du français pour le Canada (TCF Canada), from France Éducation International;
  • The Test d’évaluation de français (TEF), from the CCIP-IDF;
  • The Test d’évaluation de français pour le Canada (TEF Canada), from the CCIP-IDF;

Following the amendments to the Charter of the French Language, under Article 88.0.18 of Bill 14, which states that “an Attestation of College Studies (AEC) cannot be issued to a student who does not have sufficient knowledge of French to be able to interact, thrive within Quebec society, and contribute to its development,” all students who began a program leading to an AEC as of July 1, 2023, must comply with the new Regulation.

If the AEC is taught in French, this means the student has the required level of French. Therefore, they are not required to prove their level of French.

However, if the student is enrolled in an AEC program offered in English, the regulation stipulates that it is the student's responsibility to demonstrate their proficiency in both spoken and written French at the time of obtaining their Attestation of College Studies (AEC) from the educational institution. *

Students must meet the following minimum levels, as defined by the Québec Scale of French Proficiency Levels:

  • Oral comprehension and expression: Level 7 (equivalent to B2)
  • Written comprehension and expression: Level 5 (equivalent to B1)

You can consult the Québec Scale of French Proficiency Levels by clicking HERE.

*It is not an admission requirement.

It’s important to have all the necessary documents on hand before your departure to Canada, as the processing time can be lengthy. The processing time for a CAQ is three to five weeks, excluding postal delays, if your application is complete (including all completed forms and supporting documentation).

The processing time of an application for a study permit can vary from one Canadian visa office to another and depends on whether or not you need to undergo a medical examination. For questions, contact Trebas Institute Quebec Inc. at (514) 845-4141.
