Following the amendments to the Charter of the French Language, under Article 88.0.18 of Bill 14, which states that “an Attestation of College Studies (AEC) cannot be issued to a student who does not have sufficient knowledge of French to be able to interact, thrive within Quebec society, and contribute to its development,” all students who began a program leading to an AEC as of July 1, 2023, must comply with the new Regulation.
If the AEC is taught in French, this means the student has the required level of French. Therefore, they are not required to prove their level of French.
However, if the student is enrolled in an AEC program offered in English, the regulation stipulates that it is the student's responsibility to demonstrate their proficiency in both spoken and written French at the time of obtaining their Attestation of College Studies (AEC) from the educational institution. *
Students must meet the following minimum levels, as defined by the Québec Scale of French Proficiency Levels:
- Oral comprehension and expression: Level 7 (equivalent to B2)
- Written comprehension and expression: Level 5 (equivalent to B1)
You can consult the Québec Scale of French Proficiency Levels by clicking HERE.
*It is not an admission requirement.
